Oklahoma summers and winters can make for some painful electric bills. The good news is that a few small habits and smart upgrades can make a real difference.
- Unplug what you're not using, or use smart power strips
TVs, game consoles and chargers keep drawing electricity even when they're “off.” A smart power strip shuts them down for you.
- Do a quick evening walk-through
Before bed, turn off lights you don't need, nudge the thermostat, and switch off anything left running. It takes two minutes and adds up.
- Switch to LED bulbs
LEDs use far less energy than old incandescent bulbs and last for years. It's one of the easiest upgrades you can make.
- Replace old or spare appliances
That 20-year-old fridge in the garage may cost more to run than you think. Retiring extra appliances, or replacing worn-out ones with efficient models, can lower your bill.
- Go easy on the dryer
Run full loads, clean the lint trap every time, and hang clothes to dry when you can.
- Let your HVAC do the work
Space heaters and window units are expensive to run. Keep your central system serviced, close doors to closets and storage rooms, and consider a smart thermostat.
- Get an electrical checkup
Loose connections, overloaded circuits and failing switches can waste energy and create safety risks. An inspection every few years, or when you notice problems, keeps things running right. Learn about our Home Electrical Inspections.
