If your home has some age on it, the wiring may not be keeping up with how your family lives today. Rewiring isn't a DIY project, but it can make your home safer and more comfortable. Here are the signs it may be time.
Not enough service capacity
Many homes built before the 1960s have 60 amp service. Newer homes usually have 100 amps or more, and many have 200. If yours is under 100 amps, it can struggle with today's appliances, and some insurance companies charge more to cover it or won't cover it at all. What to know about 200 amp panels.
Not enough circuits
Modern homes have dedicated 240-volt circuits for big appliances and plenty of 120-volt circuits for lights and outlets. Older homes may have far fewer, which leads to tripped breakers and too many extension cords. Why breakers keep tripping.
An old fuse box or panel
Worn-out fuse boxes and older panels can't always protect your circuits the way they should. Buzzing, flickering or frequent trips are warning signs. 3 panel brands that need an upgrade.
Older wiring types
- Knob-and-tube, common before the 1950s, has no ground wire and wasn't made for today's loads.
- Aluminum branch wiring, used in some 1960s and '70s homes, can loosen and overheat at connections over time.
Neither one means your house is unsafe today. Both are worth having a licensed electrician inspect. Learn about our home electrical inspections.
What rewiring involves
Every home is different. Sometimes a full rewire makes sense. Other times, upgrading the panel and a few key circuits does the job. We'll walk through your home, explain what we find, and give you options. See our house rewiring service.
