Understanding EV Charging Levels for 2023 and Beyond

Updated October 2026

If you're new to electric vehicles, the charging terms can be confusing. Here's a plain-English guide to the three levels and what makes sense at home.

Level 1: a regular outlet

Level 1 uses a standard 120-volt outlet and the cord that came with your car. It's slow, adding roughly 3 to 5 miles of range per hour. That's fine for a plug-in hybrid or light daily driving, and a handy backup.

Level 2: the best fit for most homes

Level 2 runs on a dedicated 240-volt circuit, the same kind a dryer or electric range uses. It can refill most EVs overnight, which is why it's what we install most often. You can choose a simple NEMA 14-50 outlet or a hardwired wall charger with Wi-Fi and scheduling. What it costs to install an EV charger at home.

Level 3: DC fast charging

Level 3 is what you'll find along highways and at some shopping centers. It can add a lot of range in 20 to 40 minutes, so it's great for road trips. It isn't practical for homes because of the cost and the electrical service it needs.

What about plugs?

  • J1772 has long been the standard plug for Level 1 and Level 2 on most non-Tesla EVs.
  • CCS has been the most common fast-charging plug for non-Tesla EVs.
  • NACS (J3400) is Tesla's plug, and many other automakers are now adopting it.

Adapters make it easy to charge most cars almost anywhere. At home, we'll match the charger to your car.

Choosing a home setup

Think about how far you drive each day, how long the car sits at home, and how much room your electrical panel has. Many homes can add a Level 2 circuit easily. Older or full panels may need an upgrade first. What to know about 200 amp panels.
